THE LORD OF THE RINGS: GOLLUM Is a Next-Gen Adventure; Coming to PS5, XSX & PC in 2021
The latest issue of Edge Magazine is filled with new details on The Lord of the Rings: Gollum — and chances are that this precious result of Daedalic's partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises will be one of the first titles available for PS5 and XSX.
As revealed in Edge #341, Gollum is a next-gen project that is set for release for PS5, XSX and PC in 2021.
When Gollum was officially revealed last March, Daedalic confirmed that it would be playable in 2021 on PC and "all relevant console platforms at that time", so the news is in line with the studio's previous claims.
"I’ve only heard rumours about the [Xbox Series X] specs, and it’s huge – very fast Flash memory," developer Martin Wilkes told Edge. "Which excites me, of course, but I don’t think that’s relevant to this project, because we’re aiming for PC as well. Especially for level designers, though, that’s a dream come true, because we don’t have to concern ourselves with streaming corridors any more," Wilkes added.
According to the renowned makers of Deponia, Gollum is a "stealth-action adventure with an intriguing dual-personality mechanic, gigantic levels, and a densely wrought aesthetic inspired by Tolkien’s own drawings". Gollum's journey will begin in Barad-dûr, where the fallen Sauron is patiently waiting for the right moment to return and conquer the whole of Middle-Earth — with Sméagol being held prisoner by the Dark Lord of Mordor himself. During the course of the game, Gollum will reportedly visit "giant, persistent environments, each harbouring several questlines and a range of friendly or unfriendly faces."
Powered by Unreal Engine 4, Gollum will be the first, but definitely not last, Daedalic's game set in the Tolkien-created universe, as the developers and Middle-earth Enterprises are already in the process of mapping out their next joint projects.
