CONTROL's Director Discusses the Origins of the Game’s "Ashtray Maze" Level in This New Video
Mechanic: Bartosz Sobczak
Just like almost every Remedy Entertainment-produced video game, last year's sleeper hit Control is quite a disturbing experience. Thanks to this brand-new video, you can learn more about the game's best level — and the people who brought it to life.
There's no denying that the so-called Astray Maze was the highlight of an overall fantastic game, and Control's Game Director Mikael Kasurinen recently sat down with GameSpot to discuss the origins of the mind-boggling level. The video is pretty lengthy and information-heavy, starting off with the artist describing the basic idea behind the Maze, and later moving on to more technical issues.
It's worth noticing that the music accompanying the player's struggles in the Maze was composed by Old Gods of Asgard — a band that has a history with Remedy, as they also worked on Alan Wake and Max Payne games.
Considering that Control is a completely original production created by an independent studio, it's great to see it getting the recognition it deserves. As a reminder, the metroidvania has won many awards for its wonderfully Finnish game design — including Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2019.
While we're still waiting for Control's next DLC (possibly featuring Alan Wake himself), be sure to learn more about the base game in the interview down below:
