Sony Is Officially Skipping E3 for the Second Year in a Row; Will Focus on Smaller Events Around the Globe
Sony has officially announced that they will be skipping this year's E3 in Los Angeles — which basically means that you can ultimately forget about learning new details on the PlayStation 5 and its launch lineup during the world's biggest video game show.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, the company believes that organising "hundreds" smaller PS5-focused events across the globe will be more effective than attending E3 2020 — as Sony will miss E3 for a second year in a row.
"After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020," a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said. "We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year."
"We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans," the Sony representative added.
With Sony skipping this year's E3, it's clear that Microsoft will use the (unexpected?) opportunity to promote the next Xbox and overshadow the company's biggest competitor at the ever-changing console market.
Although Sony will be absent from E3 2020, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, 2K, THQ Nordic, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and many others are still planning to showcase their products at the show's floor.
