THE WITCHER Breaks Another Streaming Record; Netflix Announces a Brand-New Animated Movie

The Witcher has officially broken yet another streaming record — as last year's hit TV series inspired by Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy books is the most-viewed first season of any series produced by Netflix, watched by over 76 million households so far. It means that The Witcher has already beaten the first seasons of the American company's biggest shows like House of Cards, Stranger Things and Mindhunter.

Make no mistake, it's unlikely that almost 80 million subscribers actually watched The Witcher from the beginning to end — as it was enough to tune in for at least 120 seconds of the popular show to be counted as an active viewer by Netflix.

Through its first four weeks of release, 76m member households chose to watch this action-packed fantasy, starring Henry Cavill,” Netflix said in its Q4 Earnings Report. "In Q4, despite the big debut of Disney Plus and the launch of Apple TV Plus, our viewing per membership grew both globally and in the US on a year over year basis, consistent with recent quarters," the company added.

Netflix doesn't plan to kill its new golden goose anytime soon — as the studio has just announced a brand-new animated film based on the hit original story. Just like the hit TV series, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will be produced by Lauren S. Hissrich and Beau DeMayo, and brought to life by Studio Mir, the makers of the critically acclaimed Legend of Korra.

As a reminder, Netflix is also working on a full-blown second season of The Witcher, coming in "Early 2021."
