Valve Reveals New Details On HALF-LIFE: ALYX's Voice Cast, Writers Room, Development Team and More

While Valve still hasn't revealed the official Half-Life: Alyx release date, the American company recently shared brand-new details on the VR-exclusive video game — including the size of its development team, writers room, voice cast and more. As a reminder, Half-Life: Alyx will hit stores at some point this March.

During a recent AMA session on Reddit, Robin Walker, Jamaal Bradley, David Feise, Greg Coomer, Corey Peters, Erik Wolpaw, Tristan Reidford, Chris Remo, Jake Rodkin and Kaci Aitchison Boyle — who were representing all the designers, programmers, animators, sound designers and artists who have been working on Alyx — gave us a chance to learn a whole lot more about Valve's first major game since 2013's Dota 2

According to the developers, Alyx is being developed by around 80 people, which makes it the largest single team Valve has ever had. Given that Ubisoft regularly hires more than 1,000 artists for their biggest games — like Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint — it's amazing that Valve might actually be able to deliver yet another fantastic title with such a "modest" dev team (in comparison to other publishers).

When it comes to the titular character, Alyx won't be a mute character. "I personally prefer writing games where the viewpoint character speaks. We made the silence of the protagonist into a joke in the Portals, but you only get to pull that gag once. I had a lot fun writing for the Left 4 Deads where the characters were all little chatterboxes, so if I had my way we wouldn't do any more silent protagonists. That said, the I don't get my way as often as I deserve so who knows what's going to happen," Wolpaw — the man who co-wrote Half-Life 2 and Portal — said.

Unfortunately, Merle Dandridge — who voiced Alyx Vance in Half-Life 2 — won't lend her voice to Alyx this time around. "We worked with Merle at the beginning of HL:A development, but in the end, felt we wanted to go in a different direction. We love Merle, her work in Half-Life 2 was instrumental in bringing Alyx to life, and we hope to work with her again in the future," the studio explained.

While we know that both Alyx and the ominous G-Man will make a return in the upcoming spin-off, the team at Valve ensured fans that they will be seeing even more familiar faces in the actual game.

With Half-Life: Alyx launching in two months, Valve will surely release a slate of Alyx-related trailers and interviews in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can check out the AMA in its entirety RIGHT HERE

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

Half-Life: Alyx releases in March; compatible with the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality and Oculus Rift headsets.
