SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Tracking Points to Domestic Box Office Similar to POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU
The rivalry between Sega and Nintendo enters a new phase, as the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog flick is expected to reach the heights of last year's Pokémon Detective Pikachu, at least when it comes to the movie's cumulative domestic box office.
According to Box Office Pro's latest long-range box office tracking, Sonic the Hedgehog will open in over 4,000 theatres in the US and Canada. The network predicts that Sonic will make between $33,000,000 and $38,000,000 during its domestic opening weekend, which would be quite similar to other major live-action video game movies like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ($30,095,259) and Rampage ($35,753,093).
Although Sonic the Hedgehog may fail to dethrone Detective Pikachu's opening weekend of $54,365,242 and have the biggest domestic opening of all movies based on games, it will have a clear shot at matching the Legendary Entertainment-produced movie's total domestic haul — $144,105,346 — down the line.
In an unexpected turn of events, Paramount Pictures' original plan to butcher the classic Sonic look might have been a genius move, with fans of the blue speedsters now willing to support the studio that patiently listened to their respective audience and ultimately changed the design in response to negative reactions.
Reportedly. the review embargo for Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't lift until the day before its release, Feb. 14.
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth.
