The Team Responsible for SYSTEM SHOCK 3 Is Reportedly No Longer Working on the Threequel
System Shock 3 was officially announced in late 2015, but we're still waiting for the highly anticipated next instalment in the Warren Spector–created game series — unfortunately, it seems that the threequel won't be releasing anytime soon.
According to PGCodex member Kin Corn Karn, who reportedly used to be involved in the works on System Shock 3, the original creators of the horror production are no longer developing it. "The only reason I’m posting is because I saw so much confusion about the state of the company and the project. I thought some first person information would be welcome. I never suggested we were halfway done, core systems are a great foundation for a game but most of the work is content development which we were critically behind in, both in real assets and in tool support for an efficient pipeline."
Kin Corn Karn then added:"Those high expectations drove a lot of expensive experimentation. We were a small team and knew we couldn’t compete with current immersive sims in production quality and breadth. So, we had to be creative and clever and weird. And we were on our way to make something unique and possibly fun, but probably not what the audience was hungry for."
Back in March 2019, Director Warren Spector revealed that System Shock 3 was "more than halfway completed," but it's safe to say that the drama surrounding the long-awaited video game's original distributor, Starbreeze — and the Swedish studio's decision to sell the publishing rights back to OtherSide — have clearly affected the development team and its production schedule.
At the time of this writing, OtherSide Entertainment had no comment on the current state of System Shock 3.
System Shock 3 – The latest in the series of classic, award-winning games is in development under the direction of industry legend Warren Spector and a dream team behind such landmarks as the original System Shock, Thief: The Dark Project and Deus Ex.
System Shock 3 is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
