SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Tops DETECTIVE PIKACHU; Has the Best Opening of All Time for a Video Game Movie

Sonic the Hedgehog is shattering all box-office expectations, beating the domestic opening of Pokémon Detective Pikachu — which means that the blue speedster officially claims the title of the best opening weekend for a video game movie.

Jeff Fowler's adaptation of Sega's best-selling video series has now surpassed the 3-day opening weekend of last year's Detective Pikachu ($54,365,242) by at least $3 million — and we're still taking about the fan-favourite movie's estimated gross that may very well go up by $2-3 million when it's all said and done.

When it comes to Sonic's overseas haul, the flick grossed an estimated $43 million this weekend. With $57 million earned at the domestic box office, the movie has already hit the 100 million mark internationally.

Sonic was originally expected to make $20-30 million during its opening weekend in the US and Canada.

Although Paramount Pictures' Sonic is breaking the genre's box-office records, it's unlikely that the hero will blast through Warcraft's $439 million to become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, as it's not coming to China anytime soon (if at all) due to the devastating effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

Considering that Sonic's actual production costs are estimated at just $95 million — including the main character's costly redesign — chances are that Sonic's fist big-screen adventure won't be his last one. With Sonic the Hedgehog being the studio's much-needed win, continuing his story seems like a no-brainer.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
