ANGRY BIRDS Adaptation Officially Ordered to Series at Netflix; SUMMER MADNESS Will Debut in 2021

Although The Angry Birds Movie 2 was a big improvement over the original, it failed to become a box-office hit — fortunately, fans of the mobile phenomenon will soon be able to enjoy the adventures of Red, Bomb & Chuck from the comfort of their homes.

According to Deadline, Netflix has given a series order to Angry Birds: Summer Madness, a new animated series based on Rovio's long-running game series. The upcoming TV show will make a global debut in 2021.

Per Netflix, Angry Birds: Summer Madness will follow the three heroes as well as a cast of new feathered friends, as tween birds at summer camp under the questionable guidance of their counselor Mighty Eagle.

"Angry Birds animated content plays a key role in our long-term franchise strategy. After more than a decade in hit games, blockbuster movies and licensed products, this is the Angry Birds’ first foray into a long-form series," Rovio CMO Ville Heijari said. "We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Cake and can’t wait to unveil the world of Angry Birds: Summer Madness to viewers on Netflix."

Each instalment of the 40-episode series will run for 11 minutes and focus on "explosive antics, improbable pranks and crazy summertime adventures," with the titular birds "pushing boundaries and breaking all the rules while fending off the brash and obnoxious Pigs on the other side of the lake, who seem hell-bent on causing as much mayhem as possible!"

Angry Birds: Summer Madness is not the only TV series based on a video game franchise that's currently in the works at Netflix, as the streaming giant is also developing shows based on Diablo and Castlevania.
