Layopi Games Founder Elaborates on DEVIL’S HUNT Failure and Polish Game Developer Closure
Devil May Cry V may have been a hugely popular title, but developer Layopi Games' take on the series core features has been anything but successful — and the Polish studio's CEO has finally decided to explain what went wrong with Devil's Hunt. Given that Layopi closed its doors just over a month ago, it's not surprising that many ex-developers have been pretty vocal about the company's dysfunctional upper management.
In a recent interview with polish website Polski Gamedev, Layopi Games' founder and CEO Paweł Leśniak commented on various reports claiming that the company's higher-ups had been trying to turn their employees' lives into a living hell during production on Devil's Hunt's PC and now-cancelled console ports.
According to former employees, the management was a notorious trouble-maker with no communication skills, forcing the developers to wait for months to get paid for their work. A week before the company closed for good, the team members reportedly couldn't even enter the building to pick up their belongings.
From Leśniak's point of view, his former employees' stories are only partially true. Apparently, upper management at Layopi did everything it could to warn the development crew about the terrible financial condition of the Warsaw-based company after the abysmal launch of Devil's Hunt in September 2019.
In early February, less than six developers were still working on the console versions of the studio's failed debut project, with the rest of the team asked to "wait and see" how the situation continued to unfold.
Unfortunately, the studio's best efforts to make the game's PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch editions would ultimately turn out to be futile, as Layopi officially filed for bankruptcy just before Valentine's Day.
