PRINCE OF PERSIA Creator Jordan Mechner Reveals His SANDS OF TIME Movie Pitch From 2003
Unlike many other big-budget video game movies, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time wasn't a total disaster, but many fans of the classic title still believe Disney's blockbuster failed to capture the magic of the Ubisoft–developed production. To everyone's surprise, Jordan Mechner — the creator of Prince of Persia — has shared his original "pitch trailer" for the adaptation, showcasing what he tried to accomplish with the film.
In 2003, Mechner cut together a "movie trailer" made up almost completely of cutscenes and pure gameplay footage from the newly-released Prince of Persia video game. According to the artist, it got him his first "screenwriting gig with [writer] John August, [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures."
After almost seven in development, Mike Newell's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time made its theatrical debut in May 2010. Although the movie earned nearly $340 million at the box office — becoming the highest-grossing video game film at the time — the House of Mouse doesn't seem to be interested in continuing the Prince's big-screen story — as the company's recent Aladdin remake — which shares many similarities with Prince of Persia — was much more successful (and is actually getting a full-blown sequel).
Fans of the brand should also keep an eye on Mechner's The Making of Prince of Persia: Journals 1985-1993 - Illustrated Edition book, which hits stores on April 28 — 30 years to the month after the classic's launch.
