Ubisoft has finally announced its long-rumoured take on the evergreen battle royale genre — officially titled Hyper Scape — allowing us to take a closer look at the free-to-play title's innovative game mechanics.
First things first, it's important to note that Hyper Scape will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via Uplay) later this summer. Fortunately, PC players can join the fun right now, as the title's closed beta has already begun. If you want to be part of the action, link your Uplay and Twitch accounts and start watching a Hyper Scape live-stream on Twitch. If you're lucky, you will get a beta code distributed to your Twitch inbox.
At its core, Hyper Scape is a fast-paced FPS set in a futuristic, vast city known as Neo Arcadia. Set in the year 2054, Ubisoft Montreal's answer to PUBG and Fortnite pits 100 players against each other to compete in Crown Rush, the most popular game in the titular — and also completely virtual — world of Hyper Scape.
"We built Hyper Scape around three key pillars: The first one is the urban setting and verticality," Senior Producer Graeme Jennings said. "We really wanted to build a playground that felt different than any other battle royale. Second is the flavor, and how we mix up the rules. So you have the weapons you can find and fuse. If you have a shotgun and find another shotgun, you can fuse them and improve it. On top of that, we have the Hacks. We wanted to give players the ability to build the playstyle they like. So if you’re defensive, you can use the Wall to defend yourself, or you can use the Ball to bounce away. If you’re more offensive, you can pair a Teleport with a shotgun and get up-close and personal. That really changes the flavor and pace for how the game is played."
Considering that the French publisher's E3-like Ubisoft Forward event will take place on the 12th of July, it's safe to say that Hyper Scape will be showcased during the fast-approaching show (alongside other Ubisoft-created video games, including Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Watch_Dogs: Legion, and Roller Champions).
