GHOST OF TSUSHIMA Shines in New Japanese Trailer; Sucker Punch Talks Guiding Wind Mechanics

The team at PlayStation Japan has released a never-before-seen trailer for Ghost of Tsushima — Sucker Punch's next major PlayStation 4–exclusive game — putting the spotlight on the title's vast, colourful world.

In the long-awaited sandbox, players will assume the role of samurai warrior Jin Sakai and embark on an action-packed journey to save feudal Japan from an impending invasion of the fearsome Mongol Empire.

Speaking of the diverse universe of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch recently revealed some brand-new details on the fast-approaching game's lush environments during an interview with the PlayStation Blog.

According to Environment Art Lead Joanna Wang, the studio "visited Tsushima multiple times during the project, a [...] place crowded with mountains and dense forests. Green covers what seems like every inch of the island, a rolling tree line from the top of the mountains all the way down to the ocean."

To make in-game exploration less time-consuming and confusing, the Infamous: Second Son studio's new title introduces an immersive mechanic — clearly inspired by 2008's Prince of Persia — called the Guiding Wind. "At any time, players can summon a gust of wind to help guide them to their destination," Wang added. "As the wind blows, players will notice everything react around them — foliage, cloth, particles helping point them in the right direction. That’s not the only role the wind plays, though."

The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan—until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting—the way of the Ghost—as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

Ghost of Tsushima is coming to PlayStation 4 on July 17, 2020.
