Sonic the Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz has some truly fantastic news for all fans of the Jeff Fowler–directed adaptation of Sega's most popular game series, as its sequel will officially race into theaters on April 8, 2022.
You read that right, Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will make its theatrical debut just a little over two years after its record-breaking predecessor, as Sonic the Hedgehog was released on February 14, 2020.
It's worth remembering that Fowler's first directorial effort was the very first feature-length movie based on a major game series to earn a truly rare "A" CinemaScore — and the production also outgrossed the WB–produced Pokémon Detective Pikachu at the domestic box office ($144,105,346 vs. $146,066,470) despite the COVID-19 pandemic — so the decision to continue Sonic's cinematic story should come as no surprise.
Considering that the recently released movie's post-credit scene introduced a live-action version of Tails, it's safe to say that the beloved character will play a major role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 — possibly helping the titular hero put an end to Doctor "Eggman" Robotnik's villainous plans for world domination once again.
Fans of this year's hit should be happy to hear that Pat Casey and Josh Miller — the team responsible for the first entry's action-packed screenplay — will be writing Sonic the Hedgehog 2's script, with Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller executive producing the upcoming follow-up.
