Spider-Man Is 8th Playable Character in MARVEL'S AVENGERS; Hero Will Arrive on PS4 & PS5 in 2021
Sony has some great news for all PlayStation fans who are already planning to buy Square Enix's Marvel’s Avengers, as Spider-Man will join the fun as a DLC hero sometime in 2021 — exclusively on PS4 and PS5.
That's right, Spider-Man will be the 8th playable character in the Crystal Dynamics–developed extravaganza. Upon release, the long-awaited title's roster will consist of six warriors — Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, and also Thor — with Hawkeye coming to the game during its post-launch phase.
What's even better, the fan-favourite Web-Slinger will be available at no additional cost to all owners of the base game — as long as PS4 or PS5 is their console of choice (it's worth remembering that the PS4 version of Marvel’s Avengers will receive a completely free [and next-gen] upgrade if they purchase a PlayStation 5).
"To make sure this team up goes smoothly, Vince Napoli, our Lead Combat Designer, is hard at work making Spider-Man just as great on the sticks as he is on the page," Crystal Dynamics Associate Art Director Jeff Adams revealed on the PlayStation Blog. "This means making sure our hero moves and fights like he should, no matter which one of our War Zones he finds himself in. When he’s arcing through the air on his web line, we want you to feel [...] light and be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal. Spider-Man’s impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat."
According to Adams, Spider-Man will be introduced through an in-game event "comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results."
The fact that the in-game Spider-Man — inspired by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr.'s designs — will join a bigger universe will be beneficial to Peter, as he will have "access to the [...] technology available to the team, such as custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, and Stark Industries."
As a reminder, Insomniac Games' Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be a PlayStation 5 launch title.
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel's Avengers will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on September 4, 2020; coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this holiday season.
