Cross-Gen Looter Shooter OUTRIDERS Is Reportedly Inspired by MASS EFFECT and DIABLO
Although other popular looter shooters — like Destiny and The Division — are the main source of inspiration for Outriders, People Can Fly is not afraid to get out of its comfort zone to deliver a truly original experience.
IGN's Matt Purslow has recently had a chance to spend some time with the latest build of Outriders, and it sounds like fans of Mass Effect and Diablo should keep an eye on the Bullestorm studio's next big thing.
According to Purslow, Outriders is "surprisingly heavy on story. Its presentation format will be instantly familiar to anyone who’s played a BioWare-style RPG; cinematic cutscenes deliver big beats, while the meat of the narrative comes through conversations powered by dialogue trees. [It] won't feature any branching narrative choices like Mass Effect, but the way you interact with its world and characters feels cast from the same mould, helping create characters that are already, after just a few hours of play, more fleshed-out than the typically streamlined quest givers in games like [...] The Division."
That's right, Outriders is People Can Fly's first story-driven production, despite the fact that it technically is a bombastic looter shooter. But every Borderlands-like title is only as good as its RPG-lite mechanics, and some of Outriders' biggest areas will feel like coming home (as long as your home is Pandora or Sanctuary).
"The looter-shooter genre is one undeniably born from Diablo, itself a game with unending piles of glittering swords, staves, and shields. But where games like Destiny, Borderlands, and The Division have focused almost solely on the loot to provide options, it seems that People Can Fly has remembered that it’s the freeform experimentation that makes Blizzard’s action-RPG so moreish," Purslow added. "That could be pruning a skill tree branch to perfection, or felling the entire tree and starting over from scratch when a new ability or weapon provides a fresh avenue of opportunity."
With Outriders being the main star of this month's IGN First, we will surely learn a whole lot more about the third-person shooter in the near future. In the meantime, check out some explosive footage down below:
OUTRIDERS is a 1-3 player co-op RPG shooter set in an original, dark and desperate sci-fi universe. As mankind bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch, you’ll create your own Outrider and embark on a journey across the hostile planet. With rich storytelling spanning a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the slums and shanty towns of the First City and traverse forests, mountains and desert in the pursuit of a mysterious signal. Combining intense gunplay with violent powers and an arsenal of increasingly twisted weaponry and gear-sets, Outriders offers countless hours of gameplay from one of the finest shooter developers in the industry – People Can Fly.
Outriders is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & PC (via Steam) Holiday 2020; will arrive on Google Stadia at a later date.
