It looks like the team at Xbox Game Studios is getting ready to reveal Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of Ensemble Studios' acclaimed real-time strategy game that made its debut in 2005.
Microsoft has released an all-new image on the series' Twitter page, featuring seven Age of Empires III icons. From left to right we have: Grenadier, Archer, Musketeer, Estate, Settler, Culverin, Outpost, and Musketeer — suggesting that the long-awaited Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition will be officially announced during this year's gamecom — probably during the event's Opening Night Live on August 27, at 11AM PDT / 8PM CEST.
According to Geoff Keighley, players can expect to learn more about 20 new games at the upcoming show.
As a friendly reminder, Forgotten Empires and Tantalus Media's Age of Empires: Definitive Edition hit stores in 2018, with Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition launching last November — so there's a chance that Microsoft will indeed publish Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition later this year — possibly in the last quarter of 2020.
It's worth remembering that Relic Entertainment — the award-winning makers of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes — are still developing Age of Empires IV, which was announced back in 2017.
