THE LORD OF THE RINGS: GOLLUM Adds PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch Versions

It turns out that The Lord of the Rings – Gollum won't be a true next-gen experience, as the Blackguards 2 team's take on Prince of Persia will also be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and even Nintendo Switch.

That's right, Daedalic Entertainment's next big thing is a cross-gen production that will be released for both current- and next-gen platforms — namely PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X — at some point in 2021.

"We are aiming for an experience where gameplay and story go hand in hand to create the ultimate Gollum game," Project Manager Saide Haberstroh told GamesRadar in a recent interview. "Sticking to Daedalic tradition of games with a certain ‘human spark’ we immerse players deeply in Gollum's inner conflict, to tell a very personal story in front of the epic world-changing events in Middle-earth, interwoven with this twisted character. We have to keep in mind what Gollum's character traits are. Via dialogue we can express his scheming and manipulation but also this internal struggle."

For those unfamiliar with Gollum, it will shine a light on Sméagol's great escape from the Barad-dûr fortress. During his journey, Gollum will encounter a bunch of deadly spiders, awful orcs, bone-chilling Nazgûl, and also the Grashneg. Unlike the majority of the Dark Lord of Mordor's minions, he won't try to kill the troubled anti-hero at every turn. "The Grashneg is a help to Gollum when it comes to tasks where Gollum is not strong enough," Haberstroh said. "As you can see the Grashneg is a guy who has no problem smashing some crates, proceeding through a barrier while destroying it. Grashneg can be very helpful for Gollum, but in return, [he] also has to help the Grashneg so we face a double-sided relationship here."

While we're patiently waiting for more details about the game, take a look at its latest trailer down below:

The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is the first video game to be born out of the new fellowship forged between Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises, with scope for more new experiences in the future. This new title will remain true to the vision laid out in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and will also explore new events and details related to Gollum’s journey.

The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, and PC in 2021.
