Next-Gen Chocobos Arrive in Action-Packed FINAL FANTASY XVI Announcement Trailer

It turns out that Final Fantasy VII Remake - Part II isn't the only all-new title set in the Hironobu Sakaguchi–created world, as publisher Square Enix has officially revealed a next-gen sequel to 2016's Final Fantasy XV.

Just like this year's entry in the beloved series, Final Fantasy XVI will be a — possibly timed — PlayStation exclusive, coming to PS5 sometime in the future. "From the establishment of an all new development environment [Square Enix's Business Division 3], to learning the ins-and-outs of the PlayStation 5, the team and I have taken on countless challenges during our journey to bring you the sixteenth chapter in the storied Final Fantasy franchise," Game Director Hiroshi Takai (Final Fantasy XIV, The Last Remnant) said. "And though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!"

Produced by Naoki Yoshida (Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road, Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers), Final Fantasy XVI will reportedly be "an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay," offering players the chance to uncover the dark secrets of the Crystals — the ultimate source of elemental powers.

Unfortunately, it will be a good while before we learn more about the 16th numbered entry in the franchise, as the Japanese game developer and publisher won't share any new details about their project before 2021.

Without further ado, take a closer look at the first trailer and screenshots for Final Fantasy XVI down below:
