Production on New TOMB RAIDER Movie Is Reportedly Set for the Beginning of Next Year

The Tomb Raider flick may have missed the mark here and there, but it doesn't change the fact that Warner Bros. still believes in the potential of Alicia Vikander's grounded take on the world's greatest archaeologist.

According to Ghoul Vibes Nation, production on the sequel to the 2018 flick will start on February 22, 2021, suggesting that the studio is hoping to release Tomb Raider 2 in the latter half of next year or in early 2022.

Apparently, the continuation of Lara Croft's adventures will be shooting at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Considering that the reboot of the film series had failed to take the box office by storm, it shouldn't be too surprising that Warner Bros. has hired a new creative team for the sequel. The new movie will be directed by Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, Free Fire), with its script being penned by Amy Jump (A Field in England, Free Fire).

The follow-up to Tomb Raider isn't the only feature-length film based on a video game franchise the team at Warner Bros. is currently working on, as the studio is also producing a new movie set in the Mortal Kombat world — which should make its theatrical debut on January 15, 2021 — and a Minecraft film. Unfortunately for fans of Mojang's worldwide phenomenon, the company recently took it off their release calendar, which means that it will no longer be releasing on March 4, 2022 (said date is currently occupied by The Batman).

Warner Bros. has not shared any concrete details about Tomb Raider 2's release date (or even window) yet.
