Don't Expect NIOH 3 Anytime Soon; NINJA GAIDEN Still a

During a recent interview with The Gamer, Team Ninja's Fumihiko Yasuda provided an update on the Ninja Gaiden and NiOh series — and it turns out that launching original games is the crew's top priority right now.

According to Yasuda, NiOh 3 is not in the works at the moment, as the beloved company would like to finally do something new after years of developing various follow-ups (Dead or Alive 6, NiOh 2) and titles based on existing IPs (Fire Emblem Warriors, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order). The producer is also thinking about making an open-world video game that would put the sheer power of next-gen consoles to good use.

Thankfully, it doesn't mean that we won't get a big sequel to NiOh 2 down the road. "After creating some new projects and gaining some new experience and skills from those new potential projects, I would like to go back to the series at some point, utilise all the experience and new skills that we gain from some new projects, and then potentially, go back into the series at that point, and create an even greater game to surpass NiOh and NiOh 2 and to create something even better," Yasuda revealed.

Sadly, we can also forget about playing a brand-new game set in the Ninja Gaiden world for the time being.

"Nothing to announce or note specifically this time, but if the Ninja Gaiden series hadn't existed, then there wouldn't have been a NiOh series," Yasuda said. "So that's a really important series to Team Ninja. While we do not have anything specific to announce at this time, I would like to say just look forward to some potential news for some kind of announcement in the near future," the NiOh 2 director added.

Although Ninja Gaiden has been put on hold, its main protagonist — Ryu Hayabusa — will officially make a return in the coming months. "That character is the most important character from all of our franchises. So, considering he's so important, I'd definitely like to have him make an appearance again in a game coming soon, and I'd like to announce details about that in the future, as soon as possible," he teased.

We know very little about Team Ninja's future plans, but fans of the NiOh franchise should be happy to hear that Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition and a next-gen version of the first NiOh and NiOh 2 will arrive on Feb. 5.
