Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion Is Ready for Action in New Behind-the-Scenes Photos From MORTAL KOMBAT

Warner Bros. has shared some fresh behind-the-scenes photos from the Mortal Kombat movie — the long-awaited adaptation of one of the most successful video game series out there — shining a new light on the R-rated reboot's main cast. Yes, the flick won't shy away from some of the darker aspects of the franchise.

The latest batch of photos from Simon McQuoid's bloody directorial debut provide a closer look at Lewis Tan's mysterious character — professionally known as Cole Young — Joe Taslim's villainous Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin's deadly pyromancer Liu Kang, and finally Hiroyuki Sanada's unstoppable spirit of vengeance, Scorpion.

You read that right, Sub-Zero is the villain of this year's Mortal Kombat, and according to the director himself, his eternal conflict with Scorpion — sparked by the death of his family — will be the backbone of this story.

Thankfully, it won't be long before we get a chance to compare McQuoid's take on the NetherRealm Studios–created game series to Paul W. S. Anderson's 1995 extravaganza, as the Mortal Kombat reboot will make its debut on April 16. WB. will release the movie simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max (only in the US).

Take a closer look at these new behind-the-scenes photos from the fast-approaching video game movie:
